BOWLING

Egilshöll
February 1st. - 4th.

The arrangement in the bowling tournament is that there are 3 groups and 6 games are played in each group. Each player must submit 6 games and can play all the groups, but it’s just the best six game series that applies. After the preliminary 24 players go to the knockout state. Seat 24 to 9 (16 bowlers) competes first and each bowler needs to win two games to advance. Bowlers are arranged by qualified seat. After that, bowlers in seat 1 to 8 join in. Still the bowlers are arranged by qualified seats and need to win two games to advance to top 8 bowlers. Thus, it continues until two players are left and they play two games and the winner of the match will be RIG champion.

Reykjavik International Games has been held every year since 1989 but bowling was part of the games for the first time in 2009.

IR Bowling Club was established in August 1994 at the same time as a new Bowling Center was opened at Mjodd in Reykjavik.

From the beginning the club has been highly active and very successful in Icelandic competitions. Members of IR Bowling Club are a majority of Icelandic National Team players today. The Bowling Palace offers 22 high quality bowling lanes, with automatic scoring system and plastic lanes.

The first bowling alley in Iceland was at Camp Knox in the western side of Reykjavik, during the Second World War. There were two bowling lanes in one of the army base and the pins ware stacked by hand. Later the defense military opened a bowling alley for their people at the Keflavik Base. In 1984 building of a new bowling alley in Öskjuhlíð started. It was formally opened on the 1st of February 1985. Later that year KFR, the first Bowling Club in Iceland, was established. The Icelandic people have embraced the bowling sport from the beginning.
